Langue is a delicate issue

We had a discussion Friday morning connected to langue. How can or should we deal with the issue of langue during the academy 24hrs? The dynamics of the academy 24hrs is highly depended on a diversity of participants encountering employees, change agents and leaders primarily from the state, but from different sectors, along with other public and private sectors. However the participation of Martin Herrmann and Patricia Shaw is also essential for the dynamics and what could emerge during the days.

Managing the issue of langue seems not just to be a matter of making a decision on either or… Throughout the days we foresee different kinds of conversations on various set of themes, and it is intrinsic that Martin Herrmann and Patricia Shaw are able to be part of the conversations taking place. On the other hand, to ask or demand all conversations, plenum talks and group works to be conducted in English will properly constrain people from deepen their conversations into new dimensions on different topics. Not everybody is feeling comfortable talking about difficult topics in a foreign langue. Put themselves at risk in public, maybe having trouble finding the right words and not being able to express oneself, to explain and explore experiences in the field of learning and development, when the context is complex. And inquiry, exploration and conversations are the core of the setting and the whole idea of academy 24hrs.

Managing the issue of langue is a matter of enabling and constraining for both the participants invited and for the key notes, but also most important a matter of enabling and constraining the interaction between to two. Just as well as the issue is nearly connected to the distinction inclusion/exclusion, and hereby we are in touch with someting which can have unintended consequences and bring decisions into the mist of complex challenges. It has become quite clear that langue is a delicate issue for the contemplation of the academy 24hrs and for the work that will take place. We have discussed how to tangle the issue and tried to get hold of our range of possibilities. For instance to keep events talking place in front of all participants and plenum talks in English, and keep group works and other conversations to be held in Danish. No matter what kind of scenarios we came up with, we ended up with ambiguity. It seems clear that we can not go beyond both to gain and to loose something, no matter how we decide to confront and deal with the langue issue.

We have restrained from making an overall decisions on langue setups and we keep ourselves calm realising that we can not make the right decision on this issue. Instead we keep inviting people to take part on the 31st of March and 1st of April encouraging them to take part with the challenges that they want to work with during the academy 24hrs. Some part of the conversations and discussions will take place in English and some part in Danish. When I talk to practitioners and other people who will share their perspectives during the days, we talk about their choice on langue and reflect on possible constraints, anxiety and enabling possibilities.
